Find the missing pieces

Inspect a vague request and identify what would make it more useful.

  • Identify the task, audience, and context a prompt needs

Start with this prompt: “Write something about recycling.” It names a topic, but not what to produce, who will use it, or what information to include. The goal is not to make every prompt long. Include details that can change the answer.

Annotate the sample

  1. 1
    Choose a use

Decide who needs the recycling information and what they need to do with it.

  2. 2
    List missing details

Note the audience, purpose, and any facts or limits the prompt should specify.

  3. 3
    Draft a clearer request

Ask for a specific output, such as a short notice for apartment residents about sorting common packaging.

Check your diagnosis

Use a quick question to distinguish relevant context from vague instructions.

  • Choose context that helps define a useful response

A useful prompt gives the model enough information to make a relevant first attempt. Add details that affect the task or response; leave out background that does not.

Knowledge checkA volunteer asks an AI to draft an event reminder. Which added detail is most useful?

Assemble the prompt

Use a repeatable structure for a low-stakes task.

  • Write a prompt that specifies task, context, constraints, and format

Create a first draft

  1. 1
    Name the task

Use a specific verb, such as draft, compare, explain, or summarize.

  2. 2
    Add relevant context

Supply facts or circumstances the AI cannot safely infer.

  3. 3
    Set constraints

Specify important limits, such as reading level, length range, or topics to avoid.

  4. 4
    Choose a format

Name a useful structure, such as a table, checklist, or short email.

Choose an output format

Match the requested format to what you need to do with the answer.

  • Select an output format that supports the intended use

An output format is part of the instruction, not decoration. A comparison often works well as a table; a task someone will carry out may work better as a checklist.

Knowledge checkYou need to compare three possible meeting times by availability and trade-offs. Which format should you request?

Run a small prompt test

Check a response against your requirements before revising.

  • Evaluate a response using stated criteria
  • Revise a prompt to address a specific gap

Test your draft with an AI assistant if available. Otherwise, use a sample response or imagine a likely one. Do not treat fluent wording as proof that an answer is correct or complete.

Test and record

  1. 1
    Pick a low-stakes task

Choose something where an imperfect answer would be easy to spot and harmless.

  2. 2
    Save the first attempt

Keep the prompt and response so you can compare versions.

  3. 3
    Check each requirement

Mark which requirements the response meets, misses, or handles ambiguously.

  4. 4
    Revise one thing

Change the instruction that addresses the most important gap, then test again.

Match revisions to problems

Choose a prompt change that addresses the actual weakness in a response.

  • Match a prompt revision to the problem it is meant to solve

Sort it

Sort each revision by the main problem it addresses.

  1. State that the guide is for first-time visitors to the building.
  2. Ask for a numbered checklist instead of a general explanation.
  3. Include the event date and location in the prompt.
  4. Request a table with a column for each comparison criterion.

FAQ

Do I need to know how AI works to use this lab?

No. The lab focuses on writing clear instructions and checking responses. You can use the sample tasks without an AI assistant.

Should I put private information into a prompt?

Avoid entering personal, confidential, or sensitive information unless you are using an approved system and understand its data rules. Replace real details with fictional examples when possible.

Will a detailed prompt guarantee a correct answer?

No. Clear instructions can improve relevance, but an AI response may still be wrong or incomplete. Verify important facts with reliable sources and use qualified expertise for consequential decisions.
